QRC Continues to Support Reading & Writing Groups

Do you have an area of Quaternary research or related theme you’d like to actively explore? Would you like to join a small group of QRC members for some writing and/or research accountability? If so, apply to lead a QRC Reading or Writing Group!

The QRC is at its best when we are able to come together to meet, think, work, and support one another. To provide additional opportunities for connecting this upcoming academic year (2024-25) the QRC will be sponsoring Reading and Writing Groups. In addition to getting access to our QRC spaces in Johnson Hall, your group will receive a small stipend (1 term: $100, 2 terms: $200, academic year: $300) to help support your group. These funds can be used to supply beverages and snacks for your meetings, invite in outside speakers, facilitate field trips, or support other related activities. The QRC is also happy to help facilitate the formation of your group by advertising your group with our membership.

QRC Reading Groups are designed to primarily provide a space for active reading and dialogue around Quaternary research and related themes. Groups are expected to meet either in person or virtually during the course of a quarter (or multiple terms) to set a research and/or reading agenda, discuss works, and dialogue with invited researchers and other guests. We encourage the formation of interdisciplinary reading groups to help facilitate connections across the QRC membership and can advertise your reading group to QRC members.

QRC Writing Groups are designed to support individuals actively engaged in Quaternary research and writing. You may structure your group in a way that works for you (e.g., accountability group, on-site writing, on-site editing, etc.) though we encourage you to explore the resources available to UW faculty and students via the National Center for Faculty Diversity and Development (NCFDD, facultydiversity.org), which offers a Core Curriculum series of online workshops, 14-day writing challenge, WriteNow Access Program, and Dissertation Success Curriculum in addition to targeted webinars for article and grant writing. We encourage the formation of interdisciplinary writing groups and can advertise your writing group to QRC members.

Who can apply? The application must be sponsored by at least one UW QRC member, QRC affiliated member, or a UW student of a UW member. We also encourage your group to include additional QRC members (any category), including our adjunct members who are not in residence in Seattle.

FAQ

I have an idea for a group, but haven’t identified members of the group or would like to find additional members. The QRC will circulate an open call for Reading and Writing Groups each term. This is designed to help connect members with relevant groups and groups with potential members.

Does my group have to do an open call for members? In short, no. While each group determines the number of individuals they’d like to include, they can choose to advertise their group for new membership via the membership call or keep the group limited to members identified on the application. That said, we encourage you to solicit members from our community—this is one of the best ways to find potential new collaborators and connections!

Submission

The application must be submitted as one complete pdf file and should be sent to qrc@uw.edu. Applications are open each term.
