Reading + Writing Groups

Funding Opportunity for QRC Reading & Writing Groups

The QRC is at its best when we come together to meet, think, work, and support one another. This academic year, we’re excited to sponsor Reading and Writing Groups to create more opportunities for connection across our community.

Have an idea you want to explore?

Do you have a topic in Quaternary research (or related theme) you’re eager to dive into with others? Are you looking for research or writing accountability? If so, apply to lead a QRC Reading or Writing Group!

Groups will receive access to QRC spaces in Johnson Hall and a small stipend ($100–$300) to support your gatherings. Funds may be used for snacks and beverages, inviting guest speakers, facilitating field trips, or supporting other related activities.

QRC Reading Groups

Reading Groups offer a space for active reading and dialogue around Quaternary research and related themes. Groups can meet in person or online over one or more academic terms. Activities may include developing a shared reading agenda, group discussion, and inviting guest researchers.

We encourage interdisciplinary groups and are happy to help you find participants by sharing your group through our membership network.

Funding:

  • 1 term: $100
  • 2 terms: $200
  • Academic year: $300

Groups will also have access to QRC spaces for meetings and events.

QRC Writing Groups

Writing Groups are designed to support individuals engaged in research and writing. Structure your group however works best—accountability check-ins, on-site writing sessions, peer review, etc.

We encourage participants to explore UW’s membership with the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD), which offers resources such as:

  • Core Curriculum series of online workshops
  • 14-Day Writing Challenges
  • WriteNow Access Program
  • Dissertation Success Curriculum
  • Webinars on article and grant writing

Interdisciplinary groups are encouraged, and we can help publicize your group to other QRC members.

Funding:

  • 1 term: $100
  • 2 terms: $200
  • Academic year: $300

Groups will also have access to QRC spaces for meetings and events.

Who can apply?

Applications must be sponsored by at least one UW QRC member, QRC-affiliated member, or a student of a QRC member (view our Membership page for more information). We encourage including additional QRC members of all categories, including adjunct members who may or may not be based in Seattle.

Don’t have a full group yet?

That’s okay! The QRC can circulate an open call to help connect people with shared interests. Whether you’re still looking for members or just want to expand your group, we can help spread the word.

Note: You are not required to hold an open call. Groups can remain closed or only include applicants listed in the proposal. That said, we encourage you to solicit members from our community—this is one of the best ways to find potential new collaborators and connections!

How to apply

Send your responses to the below questions to qrc@uw.edu. Applications are open each academic term.

  1. List all sponsors (name, email) and their QRC membership category + institutional affiliation.
  2. Provide a 1–2 paragraph overview of your group’s focus and goals (short- and long-term).
  3. Indicate which academic terms your group will meet.
  4. Share the expected meeting schedule and any additional planned activities.
  5. Funding request: How much are you requesting, and how will it be used (e.g., refreshments, guest speakers, field trips, venue fees)?
  6. Indicate the number of members (or ideal group size if not finalized).
  7. Provide a list of known members (name, email, QRC status, affiliation).
  8. Will your group offer an open call for additional members?
